"Three great Rockin’ Balladeers at their best"

Submitted: 21/05/2011 12:35:12 PM

Three great Rockin’ Balladeers at their best Australia has had no shortage of Rock artists over the decades since the seminal Fifties, but few of the “belters” have been able, or had the opportunity, to serenade us with a good soulful ballad. The ballad is a change of genre and style that few can cross over from good rockin’ and master it. Three of our great rock ‘n’ Rollers did and in the process made the sound their own. In no particular order: 1. I’m counting on you – Johnny O’Keefe The father, now great grandfather, of Australian Rock ‘n’ Roll is often referred to as Australia’s Elvis. I like to think Elvis was America’s Johnny O’Keefe. O’Keefe could put over a song like no one else and rocked stadiums before stadium rock became a staple. His gruff belting voice dropped down to put over this beautiful ballad and synthesised rock and soul to infuse the track with a tender sincerity that remains the benchmark for Rock ballads. 2. Slippin’ away – Max Merrit and the Meteors Not unlike O’Keefe, Merritt belted out good solid Rock but with a more raw and guttural delivery that produced a sound like a melodic Joe Cocker. Merritt, a one-eyed, imposing bear of a man was all muso and with Slippin’ away, lumbered into the genre and left this monumental track. The arrangement is brilliant and the delivery of the lyrics has a sincerity that still moves the listener no matter how many times it is heard. 3. How I lied- Jade Hurley Still a premier country rock writer and performer, Hurley composed and recorded How I lied early in his career and it stands the test of time. It also stands as one of the great innovative tracks recorded here – or anywhere. A Rocker more than a belter, the piano playing Hurley can put over a song in any genre and with this track almost creates a genre of his own. Had this been recorded in the days of stadium rock it would have been seized upon by other artists and used as a show-stopper. Listen to How I lied and it’s not hard to imagine John Farnham or Queen really taking it out there. Just as it stands though, it is a marvellous country/rock/pop fusion masterpiece. These aren’t easy listening tracks – they compel one to listen closely and feel with them – the hallmark of a great ballad and a great balladeer. Rockin’ Magpie

JADE COUNTRY/ROCKED TAMWORTH AGAIN

This time with Special Guest Star KELLY CROSBY

RECORD CROWDS AT EVERY SHOW

Once again, this year Jade broke all attendance records at his shows at the West Tamworth Sports and Bowling Club.

This year it was different ... because Jade invited KELLY CROSBY (one half of the award winning CROSBY SISTERS) ... to be his special guest star ... and as Jade himself puts it ... she "KILLED EM". She has a naturally funny side of her which comes out in every day on-stage conversation with her audience ... and this coupled with her selection of great songs made her a real "hit" with every audience.

Jade was surprised just before the Tamworth Country Music Festival got under way with a phone call from representatives for the six combined Rotary Clubs in Tamworth asking hime to be their special guest artist on the combined Rotary Cluibs float in the street Cavalcade.

Jade said he was really "chuffed" as to be involved with such wonderful representatives of society was a real honor ... so much so that he will once again be Rotary's entertainment representative in 2011.

Wauchope Country Music Festival News

What a great festival we had in Wauchope this year

I was overjoyed at the amount of campers who came in as early as Tuesday, who filled the showground camping ground. Our back gate staffer, Corrina Dudgeon had a full on job keeping up with those who hadn’t booked in, she found camping sites all over the showground to

accommodate them all and what a great asset she was to our festival.

Hastings Country Music Association volunteered to take full control of the walk-up concert and had an abundance of great talent performing on centre stage on Friday evening, prior to the great Jade Hurley OAM.

Jade in his entire glitzy colourful outfit, stole the limelight on Friday night. Wow! what a great performance he produced, he never seems to age, and those legs of his still rise up to assist in the playing of his piano, what a showman he is.

Saturday began at 7.00 am with the bush poet’s breakfast in the hall. The canteen staff, tells me they sold over 200 bacon & egg rolls in an hour, that’s probably why I never received brekkie that day. I was flat out in the office bus getting the day’s entertainment into gear with Frank Ifield & Barry Williams. How great are these guys? They know all there is to know about the artists.

On centre stage Barry interviewed Frank giving the audience a great insight into where Frank has been, what he has achieved and what he is still doing for the country music industry, I was told by many of our country music fans,” they learnt so much more about Frank than they ever knew before after the interview”, what a great interview by Barry Williams.

We had fans attending from North Queensland down to Tasmania, and they all had a great weekend with the nonstop entertainment all day Saturday & Sunday. Buskers in the streets, Gospel show and lots lot more. The line-up of this year’s artists was sensational and they all sounded great.

The volunteers who assisted in the festival came from Queensland, Sydney, Melbourne and many places in between, without their assistance the festival would not have been the great success it was.

Our Sponsors were ecstatic at the weekend’s event and the Wauchope Chamber of Commerce has offered to assist in the promotion of the festival for 2011. This is an added bonus for the hard working committee.

Our local shops gained above expected increases in income. Let’s hope they can see the bigger picture and offer the committee financial assistance to allow the festival to grow into something a lot bigger.

Now, the 2010 festival is over but we’ve already started on the 2011 festival, many thanks to you Joy and Joys Music World for assisting the festival once again.

Wauchope CM Festival Coordinator

FORMER FEDERAL MINISTER

BRONWYN BISHOP

PAYS THE ULTIMATE TRIBUTE TO JADE HURLEY

Former Federal Minister in the Howard Government Bronwyn Bishop made a remarkable statement at a Jade Hurley show at the Tamworth Country Music Festival.

She said quote ... "I have paid big money to see many international artists including Elton John and Billy Joel ... but Jade Hurley is up there with them".

Jade commented that this was one of the nicest things said to him for a long time.

Mrs Bishop arived at the Tamworth Country Music Festival the day before, saw Jade's show advertised, went to the show that day ... then drove back to Sydney the next day.

A HUGE endorsement for Australia's greatest entertainment survivor ... "Australia's King of Country Rock" - JADE HURLEY.
